City Nature Challenge 2022

Proud sponsors of City Nature Challenge, find out what we achieved.

07/05/2022

Alongside Bristol City Centre BID, we’re proud to have sponsored City Nature Challenge, a global citizen science project to collect information about local wildlife.

Across the four-day project, Bristol and Bath collaborated with over 400 cities across the globe to record as much wildlife as possible and engage people with their natural environment.

QUEEN SQUARE

On Friday 29 April, four walks took place at Queen Square led by ecologist Cat Baker or naturalist & author Ed Drewitt. The nature walks aimed to get residents and employees from local businesses to look for and record urban wildlife.

As a part of the City Nature Challenge, our Queen Square City Nature Hub provided a space for an eDNA workshop to identify our local wildlife, run by the University of Bristol, and led by scientists from the University.

CASTLE PARK

On Saturday 30 April, visitors met at our Castle Park City Nature Hub to learn about the challenge and how to take part.

Two nature walks were led by ecologist Cat Baker and naturalist & author Ed Drewitt which received great feedback including how much people enjoyed the walks, and how they helped them to appreciate the city in a different way by making them aware of various animal and plant species in the city centre.

Another eDNA workshop took place to explore the wildlife in the city, by using a science experimentation in action.

Overall, the Bristol & Bath City region recorded a mega 7,970 observations and 1,290 species during this year’s City Nature Challenge, taking 2nd place in the UK.

The city region recorded 392 observers, taking first place in the UK.

Well done to all those who got involved.
