Bristol Museum & Art Gallery to host inaugural All Under One Moon performance

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is to host the first All Under One Moon event on Saturday 23 September, with a stunning dance performance in celebration of China’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

20/09/2023

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches at the end of September, Bristol is set to welcome performers from its Chinese Sister City, Guangzhou, in a spectacular show at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and Guangzhou Acrobatic Art Theatre will perform a series of specially selected ‘Ballet on Shoulders’ pieces in the Front Hall, showcasing a unique artform that combines classical Western ballet with traditional Chinese acrobatics.

The event is the first live public event to take place under the All Under One Moon banner, an inclusive concept created by Bristol-based marketing and communications agency MIC Connect, as a way to celebrate togetherness around the annual Mid-Autumn Festival. With its timing and strong focus on bringing communities together over food and shared fun activities, this pillar of China’s cultural calendar can be likened to the UK’s Harvest Festival.

With inspiration from both cultures, All Under One Moon aims to act as a unifying link for a range of activities, and this live event in 2023 is intended to be the first of many annual celebrations.

Following the event in Bristol, the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and Guangzhou Acrobatic Art Theatre will also be performing in London as part of a short UK tour.

Kathryn Davis, Visit West CEO, said

We are thrilled to begin to welcome back our Chinese visitors, and the visit of the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and Guangzhou Acrobatic Art Theatre is as prestigious a start as we could wish for. We have been fortunate enough to welcome some key delegations over the summer, but this really is an exciting reset and restart of our Chinese visitor market.

Dennis Hu, MIC Connect CEO, said

This year is particularly celebratory in Bristol, and we wanted to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to those celebrations. Bristol is marking its 650th anniversary, and the Museum & Art Gallery its 200th anniversary! Being able to organize this fantastic event with performers from our Sister City is the perfect way to bring communities together in celebration. We see this as the first instance of an annual celebration, that will attract Bristolians of all kinds, including the Chinese community. Bringing people together in this way is a wonderful way to encourage cultural exchange and understanding in a warm and meaningful manner.

The All Under One Moon event is organised by MIC Connect Ltd and Visit West, and co-organised by Guangzhou Culture and Tourism Department. It is hosted by Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, and performed by Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and Guangzhou Acrobatic Art Theatre. The event is strongly supported by the Cultural Office of the Chinese Embassy, Cultural Section, Chinese Embassy in the UK; China National Tourist Office, London; Bristol & West of England China Bureau; Bristol City Centre BID; Redcliffe & Temple BID; and Broadmead BID.
