A Bristol teacher has been nominated in a national Teacher of the Year competition, delivered by Miconex and sponsored by group collecting platform GiftRound, with £1250 in Love Bristol Gift Cards as a possible prize.

Led by the three central Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), the Love Bristol Gift Card can be spent with over 170 businesses in the city, including shops, restaurants, theatres and salons, giving people an easy way to support local.

Tiva Corcoran from Avanti Gardens School in Bristol was nominated to be Teacher of the Year by parent Mala McCaw who said:

“Miss Corcoran has got to be the most magical teacher there is. We first met Miss Corcoran at the school open day when she gave a speech and her passion and knowledge for early years shone through as well as her friendliness and ability to put people at ease. I knew my daughter couldn’t have found a better teacher.

“The comfort, love and joy Miss Corcoran has brought to the reception class this academic year has been incredible and honestly the thought of not seeing her beaming smile at pick up every day breaks my heart. My daughter thinks that Miss Corcoran is the absolute coolest, kindest and most wonderful human on this earth.

Mala McCaw added:

“Before my daughter started school I imagined that she would find it difficult to be away from me and home but it was actually the opposite; at the end of the school day, my daughter would cry at leaving Miss Corcoran! As a parent, there’s no better feeling that knowing your child is happy and well-cared for at school. I can’t thank Miss Corcoran enough for what she has taught my daughter during her first year in school and how she has helped her grow. I wish we could keep her forever!”

It is free for people to nominate their Teacher of the Year and all types of teachers are eligible including primary and secondary school teachers, higher education teachers, early years teachers and special educational needs teachers in the UK. The Teacher of the Year competition runs until the 31st August 2024 and the winning teacher will be announced in September 2024.

Principal at Avanti Gardens School, Mr Penny, said:

“Tiva is one of the most exceptional teachers I have had to the pleasure to work with and is such an inspirational EYFS lead for our school. As well as being passionate and enthusiastic about her class, she is also a delight to have as part of the school community. In the last year she has absolutely transformed our approach and has been recognised by the Avanti Trust and OFSTED. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of being recognised as Teacher of the Year! Everyone at Avanti Gardens is immensely lucky to have her.”

The teacher who receives the most nominations will be crowned as Teacher of the Year in the national competition. The Teacher of the Year, and their school, will each win a £500 Town & City Gift Card, such as the Love Bristol Gift Card. One person who nominated the Teacher of the Year will also win a £250 local gift card.

Bristol City Centre BID, Redcliffe & Temple BID and Broadmead BID are behind the Love Bristol Gift Card.

Steve Bluff, head of Redcliffe & Temple BID, said:

“This story from one of our local primary schools is a reminder of how valued teachers are within our community. Every time someone nominates a teacher at teacheroftheyear.co.uk counts as one vote for that teacher. Please keep on voting for your Teacher of the Year.”

Vivienne Kennedy, head of Broadmead BID, said:

“It’s fantastic that a Bristol teacher has been nominated and there’s still plenty of time to nominate more teachers in this national competition. The prize of £1250 in Love Bristol Gift Cards to be shared by the Teacher of the Year, their school, and one person who nominated them is a wonderful prize.”

Vicky Lee, head of Bristol City Centre BID, adds:

“There are many amazing teachers in Bristol who are deserving of the Teacher of the Year crown. The competition is open until the 31st August and all types of teachers are eligible.”

Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said:

“The Teacher of the Year competition is designed to shine a light on the work that is happening in our schools up and down the country, and the dedication of our teachers. Congratulations to Tiva and Avanti Gardens School for the nomination. If there is a teacher you think deserves to be Teacher of the Year, now is the ideal time to nominate them.”

The Teacher of the Year competition is sponsored by group collecting platform GiftRound. Founded in 2018, GiftRound gives people an easy way to collect money for various occasions, including end of term gifts. Town & City Gift Cards are available to buy on the GiftRound store.

Craig Forsythe, CEO & founder at GiftRound, said:

“We’re delighted to sponsor the Teacher of the Year competition so we can bring recognition to the many hard working teachers across the UK and Ireland. Teachers’ gifts are amongst the most popular collections on GiftRound so we know how appreciated teachers are by parents and children. We hope that people take this opportunity to nominate a teacher that has made a positive impact on their child’s education or their school community, and we look forward to celebrating with the winner of the Teacher of the Year in September.”
