Our annual survey of users of our Dr Bike service has demonstrated the popularity of the service with workers in Redcliffe and Temple. The service which launched in 2021 has now maintained over 700 bikes, providing a free service to get people back on two wheels and feeling more confident on their cycle to work.

The free sessions take place outside 2 Glass Wharf on the second Tuesday of every month and in Finzels Reach on the last Wednesday of every month with additional sessions taking place each month at various buildings around the area.

A recent survey of Dr Bike users found that 100% of respondents would recommend the service to a friend or colleague and 40% of respondents increased the use of their bike following the service. Over 1/4 respondents also stated that they booked the service to help enable them to cycle to work, demonstrating the role of the service in helping people choose an active, zero emission commute.

Survey Feedback

We've loved reading your comments and suggestions, with comments including:

'I have used the service a couple of time now, and each time it has kept my bike on the road longer. The Dr Bikes are a perfect mix of excellent servicing and telling me off for not maintaining my bike better...'

'Loved this service, was really quick, felt confident in the summary that was given to me and my bike was in a much better state afterwards!'

'The mechanic was great - he was really careful and I felt went beyond what he needed to do.'

'Friendly, helpful, professional and much appreciated!'

'Friendly efficient knowledgable and provided a list of suggested actions to improve the running of my bike (and make easier/safer my commute!). '

'Really knowledgeable and helpful - he explained the problems really clearly and set out the realistic options for what I could do with them.'

Speaking about the initiative, BID Project Manager Tom Swithinbank stated how well the initiative has been received.

“We know from our work that businesses, staff and residents frequently use their bikes to get around the BID area but are keen to see cycling levels increase, especially as a mode to travel to work. We’re delighted with the continued uptake of the service and amazing feedback we’ve received. The Dr Bike service is proving a really effective way of helping people feel safer on their bikes. Combining this service with the new cycle lane on Victoria Street coming next year and the hope of lower traffic streets in the future will see the BID area become a much more cycle friendly part of the city.”

Local charity Life Cycle UK provide the mechanics for the 30-minute sessions with funding from the BID’s sessions providing support for the charities work to help get people on two wheels. Funding has also been provided by Travelwest, Bristol City Council’s Transport Initiative.

As well as offering a professional Dr Bike service, Life Cycle UK provides a range of support to help people on their cycling journey: For example, those who feel nervous about riding on the road or unsure of the best cycle-friendly routes can book up to three, free cycle sessions with a qualified instructor.
